Route Selection
An initial feasibility study of the project is carried out in order to identify several possible routes for a potential pipeline system. Before the preferred route is selected, alternatives are evaluated and compared.
- Community and pipeline safety issues are top priorities
- Construction and operations challenges are limited by avoiding as much as possible complex terrain or areas that will be too difficult to restore
- Contact with areas designated as environmentally sensitive, such as parks, protected areas and special areas, is limited
- Where possible, the number of river, stream, highway, road, rail and utility crossings are limited
- Where appropriate, existing pipeline rights-of-way are paralleled to reduce to overall impact of the pipeline
- Whenever possible, other rights-of-way are used as temporary working space for pipeline access and construction to minimize environmental and land use effects
As the process continues, the pipeline route will be further refined based on detailed engineering studies and public input that will be carefully considered.
