Economic Opportunity

Employment

The construction and operation of Northern Gateway will deliver economic and social benefits to local communities in northern British Columbia and Alberta.  As a multi-billion dollar project, it’s expected to generate a lasting legacy of local investment, tax revenue and jobs for the North.

We anticipate the creation of approximately 62,700 person-years of employment over a three-year construction phase, as well as over 1,150 long-term jobs in maintenance and operations of the pipelines and marine terminal.  Additionally, thousands of indirect and induced jobs will be generated to support the operation of the pipeline in areas such as transportation, mechanical services, and accommodation.

Our team of pipeline experts is committed to working with communities and individuals to learn about Northern Gateway and explore the opportunities associated with building and operating these pipelines.

How to Build a Pipeline

With an anticipated 62,700 person-years of employment created during construction alone, we will work with local communities to access training and education initiatives to build the skills and experience needed on this exciting project and other similar projects. Our vision is to maximize the capacity and potential of individuals to ensure Northern Gateway establishes a legacy of employability and learning in all communities along the route.

The two pipelines will be built in sections called spreads over a three year period. Three sections of pipeline will be built at the same time and each spread will have a construction crew working on:

  1. Right-of-way preparation
  2. Grading and soil handling
  3. Hauling and stringing the pipe
  4. Bending the pipe
  5. Welding
  6. Digging the trench
  7. Lowering in the pipe
  8. Installing valves and special fittings
  9. Pipeline water crossings
  10. Backfilling the trench
  11. Cleaning and testing the pipe
  12. Cleaning up the right of way

200+ Permanent Jobs

Post construction, Northern Gateway will generate 1,150 long-term jobs throughout Canada during operations. We anticipate over 165 jobs created by Kitimat operations, including terminal and marine services, tug fleet and environmental monitors.

Direct positions will be required in:

  1. Terminal operations
  2. Escort tug operations
  3. Berthing tug operations
  4. Booming boat operations
  5. Marine facility security
  6. Environmental Monitoring
  7. Oil spill response
  8. Administration
  9. Maintenance and repairs
  10. Pump station operations and maintenance
  11. Pipelines operations and maintenance

Thousands of indirect jobs

Part of the lasting legacy Northern Gateway will establish involves the generation of thousands of indirect jobs that will result to support this multi-billion dollar project.

To support the pipeline and marine facilities, indirect positions will be required in the following areas:

  1. Maintenance of the berth and tank farms
  2. Engineering services
  3. Structure inspections
  4. Replenishment of supplies for tugs
  5. Refueling of tugs
  6. Ship agency work
  7. Border patrol/customs
  8. Third party inspection (ship drafting surveys)
  9. Laboratory work (testing oil)
  10. Waste treatment (from vessels)
  11. Road maintenance and facility access
  12. Cleaning/janitorial
  13. Food services and accommodation
